Defendor, 2009

Woody Harrelson quietly had a big year in 2009. Zombieland, The Messenger, and this little gem Defendor! Woody plays a slower man who dawns the guise of Defendor, a superhero after Captain Industry. The movie opens with Arthur Poppington, or Defendor, being interviewed by a court appointed shrink. Apparently Defendor has gotten himself arrested, makes sense for a vigilante.

Through his court appointed mental evaluations we are caught up on the story of Defendor, whether it be his crack addict mother from his childhood, building a friendship with a local prostitute, or tracking Captain Industry, Arthur is endearing. You understand why it is that Arthur is doing what he is doing, and like this years Kick Ass! the movie asks us why there are no real life superheroes? Probably because for such a hazardous jobs the health benefits suck, maybe this health care reform will see an influx of heroes out there.

Defendor is a charming movie that packs a lot of heart. It's also quite hilarious. Some of you may have to look past the occasional bits of language, but you will definitely enjoy a superhero who uses marbles and wasps, yes wasps as weapons. This one is already out of theaters, not sure it was ever there except for a limited run being a small independent film. Check it out, you won't be dissapointed.
